The
beach of Kouremenos is one of the most famous beaches in
Greece and abroad for the lovers of windsurfing. At one
point of the beach, there is an organized windsurfing
club where you can get lessons whatever your level by
professional teachers. You can also rent new and in very
good condition windsurfing equipment.
Less than 2 km away from the beach of Kouremenos and from
Grandes Apartments, there is the village of Palekastro,
one of the biggest in the area of Sitia with around 1300
inhabitants. You will find there many mini-markets, butchers,
souvenir and gift shops, bookstores (one with foreign press),
a pharmacy, a doctor, Internet Cafes and a bank. In Palekastro,
there is also a Folklore
Museum, worth to be visited during your stay.
Very close from Palekastro and on the way to Hiona, you
can visit the small village of Agathias with its strong
traditional style, built in amphitheater on the side of
a small hill.
The lovers of nature, the walkers and trekkers should not
forget to pass the gorge of Chochlakies. Remarkable canyon
5 km far from Palekastro, it is around 3 km long and the
way is a remarkable experience with its impressive and wild
beauty. After a walk of one and a half hour the gorge is
ending to a beautiful isolated bay, idyllic for swimming,
fishing and resting.
Following
the way to Zakros, which is 20
km away from Palekastro, you will pass through small traditional
mountain villages. Zakros is an evergreen village with water
sources and tall planes. A little outside of the village,
you will find the entrance of an imposing gorge, one of
the biggest and most beautiful in Crete.
At the end of the gorge, lies a splendid seaside settlement,
Kato Zakros, one of the quietest
and picturesque corners of Crete.
At a short distance you can go until the cave of Pelekita,
which is among the biggest and most beautiful in the island.
It is around 5 km from Kato Zakros and it can be reached
either by foot or by boat. It is a watercourse ancient underground
river and it is ending in a small lake. Worth to be visited,
you will however need equipment and it is not recommend
to beginners without a professional guide.
