CHIONA BEACH

CHIONA BEACH

This is a long, beautiful, unorganized beach, sandy, with shallow crystal clear waters and enough tamarisk trees offering shade. Chiona name has nothing to do with chioni (the Greek word for snow). Conversely, it is derived from chiona which means carob storehouse in the Cretan dialect. Indeed, the whole area was known for trading carobs, which were piled in the carob storehouses before being transferred by ship.

It is a beautiful long beach with fine sand and calm shallow waters, ideal for young children. Along the beach there are tamarisk trees that provide shade and relaxation. During summer months the wind is usually strong enough, unlike autumn and spring when there are greater chances to experience a calm wind.

The location around Chiona is covered with olive groves.

Next to the beach there are other bays that offer more isolation.

If you visit the area, you could visit the Minoan port in Roussolakos.
